Cambodia aiming for another volleyball gold

Cambodia men’s disabled volleyball squad downed hosts Indonesia 3-2 in the semi-finals and will face Thailand in the final at the 11th ASEAN Para Games in Solo.

Cambodia were beaten 21-25 in the opening set before securing a 25-15 win in the second set. In the third set, Indonesia bounced back with 25-21 win, but they could not stop a Cambodia fightback, who took the next two sets 25-13 and 15-11 to upset the hosts.

Following the narrow win, Cambodian captain, Ou Phalla, said they were initially stunned by the quality of the Indonesia, who forced them to fight hard for the victory.

“Before the match, I thought it wouldn’t be a tough one for us, but they proved me wrong. We didn’t perform well because I think we overworked,” said Phalla.

“We watched them play, and we thought they were not difficult opponents. We definitely didn’t play well in the first set, but luckily recovered and improved.

“They did nott play well against Thailand, but against us they were very good. Their performance is quite different when they faced Thailand. They’re tall, and that gave us a lot of problems.”

Phalla said that Indonesia had a short intensive training camp and that helped them to be strong in the first few sets but after that they ran out of stream – giving Cambodia the advantage.

Cambodia will face Thailand in the final tomorrow in the gold medal match, while host Indonesia will take on Myanmar for bronze.
